Creative Printmakers Thrive at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

For print media artists looking to hone their printmaking craft in an inclusive and creative environment, an MFA in Printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is the perfect place. The Department of Print media offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the printmaking process that rewards creative thinking, experimentation, and the drive to bring new ideas to fruition. Students undergo academic research to strengthen their artistic process and use newly honed skills within the applied printmaking process. The department embraces a contemporary approach to print media, employs new and innovative technologies and materials, and cultivates an environment of iteration and discovery.

Students have access to a well-equipped printmaking facility with more than 11,000 square feet of workspace. They work in individual graduate studios with 24-hour access. The facility is outfitted with numerous Intaglio/relief presses, screen printing stations, large format vacuum tables, lithography impression presses, automated and hand offset presses, laser cutters, 3-D printers and scanners, a bookbinding studio, and darkrooms for screen-printing, lithography, and intaglio. The program also provides access to the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection and the Art Institute’s Glore Print and Drawing Study Room.

Faculty are eager to mentor and aid artists in developing unique ideas in aesthetics, applications, and productions. With more than 100 graduate faculty advisors at SAIC, students have the ability to choose a mentor who fits their artistic vision while challenging their creative process. Coursework includes discussion in distributive practices, aesthetics, applications, and techniques. Students engage with the historical process of printmaking and grapple with its place in the field of contemporary art.
